Description

The Gaja winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by four generations of the Gaja family. It is in the town of Barbaresco which lies just northeast of Alba. Giovanni Gaja was the great-grandfather of Angelo Gaja, the winery’s current owner. Angelo Gaja's father bought grapes for his Barolo from this Serralunga vineyard until 1961 when the Gaja family decided to produce wines only from estate-owned vineyards. It was with great pride and a bit of emotion that Gaja resumed producing Barolo when they acquired this vineyard in 1988. Reflecting the decades-long wait, the wine was named Sperss, Piedmontese for "nostalgia." Fermentation with skins in stainless steel. One week at 82ºF, then two weeks at 64ºF. Ageing: 12 months in barriques and then 12 months in large oak casks.
