25 ANNI Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG - 94 Points

Arnaldo Caprai

Wine Type: Dry red wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 100% Sagrantino
Tasting Notes: he 2006 Sagrantino di Montefalco 25 Anni completely saturates the palate with masses of dark fruit. Many of the dark, balsamic notes that are present in the Collepiano are found in the 25 Anni as well, but here the wine’s expansive, glorious fruit takes on another dimension of sheer richness and opulence. The Sagrantino tannins are present, but they are nearly buried under the wine’s intense fruit. Nearly. The big, massive finish suggests the wine is an infant, so patience is required. A blast of smoke, earthiness, tar and game adds the final exclamation point. This is a spectacular, head-spinning 25 Anni from Marco Caprai. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. ...Antonio Galloni for The Wine Advocate- Robert Parker

Collepiano Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG - 94 pts

Arnaldo Caprai

Wine Type: Dry red wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 100% Sagrantino
Tasting Notes: Mint, sage, eucalyptus, wild cherries, plums, juniper berries and licorice are just a few of the nuances that emerge from the gorgeous, utterly compelling 2006 Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano. This is an especially exotic vintage for the Collepiano, but the wine is utterly convincing. The firm, powerful Sagrantino tannins are on full display, so readers will want to cellar this for at least a few years. Despite the wine’s formidable structure, there is more than enough fruit to balance the tannins all the way through to the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2026.

Montefalco Rosso DOC - 90 pts. Robert Parker

Tasting Notes: The 2008 Montefalco Rosso is simply beautiful in this vintage. Silky, ripe tannins frame an expressive core of red berries, flowers and tobacco. The wine reveals gorgeous length and a refined, understated finish. Readers who enjoy more tertiary nuance may want to cellar this for a few years. In my experience Caprai’s Montefalco Rosso peaks between ages eight to ten. Still, it is impossible not to admire the wine today. This is a terrific effort from Marco Caprai. Lilith- English Pale Ale Style

Bruton

Grape Variety: Choice Barley and Hops
Tasting Notes: Deep colour, like a very old Tokaji with a touch of ruby; cloudy. Lovely, immediately likable nose, complex but not overpowering, a touch of burnt honey sweetness, with a hint of the sour sweet aroma of wheat beer. The palate is quite a surprise, being much more restrained than you expect but with a lovely texture - doughy and round. The joy is in the finish -soft and malty, with hints of raisin bagels. Very long. Possibly the nearest in style to English ale. Easy to drink on its own, but it has the substance to deal with food.

Masciarelli

Wine Type: Dry red wine

Tasting Notes: Dark ruby red with bluish highlights. A very intense bouquet, complex full and fine. A very full fruity and floral palate reminiscent of rd forest fruit, blackberries, peonies, eucalyptus, rose petals, vanilla, cocoa, leather and hummus. The 2005 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Villa Gemma shares many qualities with the San Martino - which is to say gorgeous dark fruit- but also imposing tannins that threaten to dominate the wine’s overall balance. This intense, powerful Montepulciano needs time to absorb its oak. If the plumpness of the fruit emerges, it will be an even better wine than my note suggests. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020.

The Proctors had purchased a lovely estate overlooking Dry Creek to the north and Russian River Valley to the south. They wanted to replace an old Chardonnay vineyard with Pinot Noir and needed advice on rootstock and clonal selections. Sitting on their deck that first afternoon and sharing a glass of wine, Merry asked if they would be willing to lease the site. Georganne was thrilled, but had one request ? rose bushes at the end of each row. When asked her color preference, Merry intuited the answer ? yellow! On the way home, Ken and Merry chatted about the exciting potential of the property. Suddenly they had to stop and look at each other ? their middle names, George and Ann, combined to form Georganne. Valdicava

Wine Type: Dry red wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 100% Brunello
Tasting Notes: Wine Spectator- Displays complex aromas of blackberry and cherry, with a hint of licorice. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a delicious finish of wonderful yet subtle fruit. Well-integrated and beautiful. Everything is in the right place. Best after 2011. 5,000 cases made. –JS Robert Parker he 2004 Brunello di Montalcino is simply beautiful. Now that the wine is in bottle it is even better than when I tasted it from barrel. Firm but silky tannins frame a core of ripe dark fruit as this powerful yet elegant Brunello opens up in the glass. Smoke, cured meats, earthiness and graphite develop in the glass, adding further complexity. Sweet roses and spices linger on the long, refined finish. This is a big, structured Brunello, and like all of Abbruzzese’s wines, it needs at least a few years of bottle age before it offers its finest drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

This is one of most rich, concentrated Brunellos of the vintage. Dark and enveloping on the palate, this powerful, virile Brunello closes with substantial heft. It should age beautifully on the depth of its fruit, but readers will enjoy a far more complete drinking experience if the wine is given at least few years in bottle to shed some of its baby fat. Tasting Notes: The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino flows with gorgeous layers of dark red fruit. This is one of the more muscular, virile wines of the vintage. Slow to reveal its character, the Valdicava Brunello will require significant patience, but I have seen the wine blossom beautifully, even in the smallest of vintages. A blast of iron, smoke, tar, licorice and new leather inform the deep, intense finish. This is a hugely promising, brilliant Brunello from proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese, but it needs to be buried in the cellar for at least a few years. Readers who can’t wait should open the wine a few hours in advance, which will allow the fruit to emerge. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031.

Valdicava

Wine Type: Dry red wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 100% Brunello
Tasting Notes: Don’t let the firm tannins fool you, the 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano is a stratospheric wine. It is one of the most powerful, intense and brooding wines of the vintage yet everything is miraculously in place. Dark cherries, licorice, new leather and flowers gradually emerge from a wall of unyielding tannins. With time in the glass the wine’s inner perfume gradually emerges. Smoke, tar, scorched earth and a host of dark, brooding flavors mark the long, powerful finish. Readers will need to be patient here, but the 2005 Madonna del Piano will deliver the goods. Anticipated maturity: 2020-203 Valdicava has been somewhat of a controversial property over the last few years. The Brunellos are typically very concentrated and dense when young, which can make them hard to assess. Make no mistake about it though; these are very serious wines whose only difficulty lies in giving them a few more years in bottle than the vast majority of Brunellos.

Gragnano Penisola Sorrentina DOC

Vini Iovine

Wine Type: Dry red wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: Piedirosso 50%, Aglianico 30%, Sciascinoso 20%
Tasting Notes: Italians, it turns out, aren’t big on vino with pizza. Beer, yes (Peroni, usually). Even Coke. There is one rather obscure exception: Gragnano, the frizzante red that comes from the town of the same name on the Sorrento Peninsula outside of Naples. Drunk young and served chilled, Gragnano has a touch of sweetness, a smoky finish, and a slight effervescence that cuts the fattiness of cheese and oil. David Orange, president of Brooklyn-based importer Wine Emporium, started bringing in Cantine Federiciane Monteleone Penisola Sorrentina Gragnano five years ago, and describes the blend as “inky, grapy, and similar to Lambrusco, with smaller bubbles.” The wine has DOC status, appealing to those new-school pizzaioli who aspire to Neapolitan authenticity in all things. That’s why you’ll find it on the lists at Mercatto, and Pizzeria Libretto!

Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC 95 pts. Pa

Zymé

Wine Type: Dry red wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 30% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 20% Rondinella, 5% Oseleta, 5% Croatina
Tasting Notes: A deep ruby, with generous legs generated by its higher alcohols. On the nose, nuances of semi-dried grapes exhibit the impact of its elder brother, Recioto. Pungent balsam melds with dark cherry, dried plum, and wild red berry fruit, yielding at the close to spice essences, such as black pepper, mint, and bitter almond. On the palate, it is dense, mouthfilling, and multi-layered, ranging from fruit to grass to rose petals. Long lingering, lean and crisp, utterly distinctive. Robert Parker: The 2004 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is fabulous. Espresso, grilled herbs, leather, black pepper, wild cherries and licorice blossom on the palate as this layered, totally sublime Amarone conquers the palate. This is a mid-weight style of Amarone built on a core of elegance rather than sheer power. The 2004 is just a touch forward, which is the only thing that keeps the score from going higher. Based on the more recent wines I tasted, there seems to be no limit to what this estate can ach

Zymé

Wine Type: Dry white wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 60 White Rondinella, 15 Golden Traminer, 15 Kerner, 10 Incrocio Manzoni
Tasting Notes: Background: during some usual inspections through vineyards, in 1999 I discovered some white toning bunches of vine branches from an old Rondinella grape strain. I was curious and I begun to experiment with the production of strains with perfectly white grapes. Nowadays it is feasible and it’s possible to obtain a part of vineyard with perfect material. Differences from a black Rondinella grape are medium vigour and lighter colour leaves along with grapes that assume a copper colour according to insolation. Other species of vine chosen: so, not by chance, even complementary species of vine derive from different stubs through crosses. The choice of them has been determined by a personal and subjective idea of equilibrium as well as personality. Wine description: light green with yellow hues, well structured wine with a bouquet that reminds citrus trees and perennial herbs like mint, it is stout inside the mouth and of great persistence

Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOP

Zymé

Wine Type: Dry red wine
Country: Italy
Grape Variety: 40% Corvina, 30% Corvinone, 25% Rondinella, 5% Oseleta
Tasting Notes: Background: Smooth, elegant, refined, as well as light-bodied, although the latter term does not imply lack of complexity. On the one hand, a clean-edged profile gives it classic typicity, but its genuineness reflects great personality on the other. This is the expressiveness that I strive to bring out, reflecting our grapes, our soils, and the care, increasingly painstaking, to avoid invasive winemaking procedures. Main characteristics: Appears a slightly garnet-tinged ruby red, with pale purplish highlights at the rim. A gentle swirling of the glass will release very subtle fragrances of ripe dark cherry and, paradoxically, a hint of tobacco leaf. After a smooth, easy entry, it is silky and seductive, with judicious impressions ripe fruit and spices.
